Marshall Klaus Award: NEC Research

The Marshall Klaus Award is given every year in honor of Marshall H. Klaus, M.D., who was an internationally known neonatologist and scientist.
Applications for 2025 are closed, stay tuned for the opening of the 2026 application.

Applications Open for Scholars Aligned with NEC Research Priorities

In partnership with the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, the NEC Society is proud to sponsor the Marshall Klaus Award for NEC Research —granting $5,000 to one neonatal fellow each year bringing us closer to a world without necrotizing enterocolitis. Neonatal fellows dedicated to advancing the NEC Research Priorities should apply.

Applications for 2025 are now closed, stay tuned for the opening of the 2026 application.

Research Requirements

When it comes to necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), there are so many unanswered questions and very few resources. Our multidisciplinary team undertook a two-year project to identify the most urgent and impactful research topics to help our community decide where to direct the limited funding and resources available for NEC research. The team first identified over 150 potential research topics, and collaboratively narrowed these to 20 prioritized topics, using the Delphi method.

Kelly Orgel applied as a Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellow at UNC Chapel Hill’s Department of Pediatrics. After Kelly’s daughter was born extremely premature, she chose to pursue a career in neonatology and has an unrelenting determination to improve neonatal health through her research.

Kelly’s 2024 Awarded Project explored signaling pathways implicated in immune dysregulation in NEC, which could provide clarity on how NEC develops and progresses so we can intervene as early as possible.

We’re so grateful for clinicians and scientists like Kelly. Thank you for helping us #preventNEC! Apply now for the 2025 Marshall Klaus Award.
