Gabriela was born prematurely at 26 weeks and 2 days gestation after fighting to stay in the womb for 6 weeks post PPROM. After having a promising start in the NICU, Gabriela became sick on her fifth day of life. She had developed NEC.
Gabriela required emergency surgery. Devastatingly, her doctors were not able to save any intestinal tissue. Gabriela tragically passed away from NEC within less than 24 hours of her diagnosis.
“I will always wonder how Gabriela’s mixed race —Hispanic and Black—contributed to her risk and tragic outcome.”
Tabitha, Gabriela's mom
What Helped
- Holding Gabriela and changing her diaper
- The items the NICU provided as keepsakes through Gabriela’s journey
- Allowing family to be present for when the medical team does the rounds and having donor milk as an option
What Hurt
- Dismissing Gabriela’s symptoms as signs of prematurity
- Not hearing from some members of her care team after her passing
- Some of Gabriela’s belongings weren’t transferred with us between hospitals
What To Do
Run the test, even if symptoms could be related to prematurity—there’s no harm in being certain
- Allow parents to partake in baby’s care as soon as possible
- Inform parents about the risks and protective factors of NEC
