Cole was born at 33 weeks gestation, and initially did well in the NICU. However, on day four, Cole’s parents could tell that something was wrong. The next day, Cole was diagnosed with NEC.
Cole was treated for NEC immediately, and after three very scary weeks of antibiotics, Cole recovered from NEC. He is now a thriving 6-year-old.
“My wife could tell something was wrong with Cole before anyone else. We wish the doctors and nurses took our concerns more seriously.”
Tyler, Cole's dad
What Helped
- Compassionate staff at such a difficult time
- Support for our well-being, as Cole’s parents
- Connecting with other families, who could relate to our experience
What Hurt
- We are so grateful for our outcome with NEC and for our care team. Yet, we wish we were taken more seriously and felt heard when we knew something was wrong with Cole.
What To Do
Listen to parents and take their concerns seriously. Trust their instincts. Parents are with their baby more than anyone else and often notice when something is off.
