2026 Awardee: Jessica Santana, MD, Receives The Marshall Klaus NEC Research Award

Every year, the NEC Society is honored to fund this $5,000 research award for one neonatal-perinatal fellow or pediatric resident. Fellows are key to driving progress and innovation in this field.

The NEC Society is honored to fund Jessica Santana, MD, with $5,000 as our Marshall Klaus Award recipient for NEC research.

Jessica Santana, MD, is a fellow in the UC Davis Health Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program.

Dr. Santana is mentored by Dr. Steve McElroy, NEC Society Scientific Advisor and Chief of Neonatology at UC Davis Health Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Santana’s project is titled: Impact of Total Body Sodium Depletion on Neonatal Neutrophil Responses in NEC and Sepsis.

Preterm infants have high rates of total body sodium depletion. There are emerging associations between sodium supplementation and lower rates of NEC and sepsis, however, the mechanisms underlying this association are largely unstudied. We are grateful to support Dr. Santana’s work which aims to provide insight into how total body sodium status may influence the proinflammatory neutrophil response during NEC and sepsis.
