2024 Awardee: Kelly Orgel MD, PhD, Receives The Marshall Klaus Research Award

The NEC Society is honored to fund a $5,000 research award for early-career faculty, who are key to driving progress and innovation in this field.

Kelly Orgel applied for this award as a Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellow at UNC Chapel Hill’s Department of Pediatrics. After Kelly’s daughter was born extremely premature, she chose to pursue a career in neonatology and has an unrelenting determination to improve neonatal health through her research.

Kelly’s 2024 Awarded Project explored signaling pathways implicated in immune dysregulation in NEC, which could provide clarity on how NEC develops and progresses so we can intervene as early as possible.
