Long-Term Outcomes of NEC
Babies can thrive after NEC. Sometimes, babies do not have any long-term complications when they go home after a NEC diagnosis. Sometimes, babies experience mild to severe life-altering complications after they have been home from the NICU for weeks, months, or even years.
NEC After the NICU
After a NEC diagnosis, some babies may have difficulty reaching developmental milestones during their first months and years of life. Potential complications from NEC can increase the risk of infections and the need for future hospitalizations.
Every baby is unique, and it can be hard to know if your baby will experience long-term complications from NEC.
Potential complications after NEC:
- Gastrointestinal (digestive) problems
- Slow growth
- Cognitive delays
- Bowel surgery
Current research studies focus on outcomes at two years of age, but we hear from families who experience complications well beyond two years. We urgently need to advance NEC research so we can better understand the long-term outcomes of the disease.
Join the NEC Registry
The NEC Registry is a platform for patient-families to share their experiences with NEC, from diagnosis to the long-term physical, social, and emotional impacts of the disease. This is a powerful opportunity for individuals and families affected by NEC to contribute directly to research that will help us understand this devastating disease.
A Survey of Survivors and Parents: NEC Long-Term Outcomes
Our research project explored these questions. We are grateful to our patient-family community, who helped to build and launch this research project, and who took the time to share their family’s personal experience with NEC.
What are the long-term outcomes of NEC? How does NEC affect children, families, and adult NEC survivors years after their original NEC diagnosis? Read the published study.
This research study was led by Jennifer Canvasser from the NEC Society and James Harrison from the University of California San Francisco.
