Lemonade for Luna
Every year, Luna’s loved ones from around the world also host lemonade stands in their local communities to raise awareness and support for the NEC Society. From New York to London to California, lemonade stands honor precious Luna during NEC Awareness Month to fuel the NEC Society’s mission.
Luna was born at 27 weeks gestation, after being diagnosed with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Initially, Luna thrived and surpassed expectations in the NICU. She loved showing off her own feisty, fiery personality at just a few days old.
Despite her strength, Luna developed NEC at 33 days old. She underwent surgery, but the disease moved too aggressively. Luna had total necrosis.
Tragically, just a day after her NEC diagnosis, Luna passed away in her loving parents’ arms at 34 days old.
"Every memory, milestone, and moment I have with my daughter happened inside the walls of the NICU. By supporting the NEC Society, you are helping to advance the research, education, and advocacy that are urgently needed so no family has to endure the devastation of this disease."
Stephanie, Luna's mom, NEC Society Board Member
About the NEC Society
The NEC Society is the world’s leading nonprofit dedicated to necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). NEC is a devastating intestinal disease that primarily affects premature and medically fragile infants. Tragically, NEC is a leading cause of death in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).
The NEC Society is led by a global community of patient-families, clinicians, and scientists. Together, we are accelerating NEC research, education, and advocacy, and transforming what is possible for infants and families.
The NEC Society was launched in January of 2014 by Jennifer Canvasser after her son, Micah, died from complications of NEC just before his first birthday.
