What We Do

Micah in the NICUNEC (necrotizing enterocolitis) is a leading cause of infant death, impacting hundreds of babies every year in the United States. It is a devastating intestinal disease that primarily affects preemies and medically fragile infants.

The NEC Society is a non-profit, 501c3 organization, made up of a diverse group of healthcare practitioners, researchers, and families who seek to improve outcomes for infants at risk of necrotizing enterocolitis. For more about us, check out the NEC Society’s vision.

Our Mission: Through education, outreach, research, and advocacy, we are committed to understanding necrotizing enterocolitis and reducing its incidence.

NEC is a leading cause of infant death and impacts the lives of hundreds of babies every year in the United States.

Research has shown that there are ways to help prevent this devastating disease. Here are ways we strive to improve outcomes, raise awareness and drive research:

Raise awareness
  • On the factors that increase the risks:
    • Formula
    • Antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals
    • Quick advancement of feeds
  • On the factors the reduce the risks:
    • Human milk
    • Probiotics
Advocate
  • For promising policies and strategies to improve outcomes and patient-family centered care for infants at risk of necrotizing enterocolitis.
  • For hospitals to implement best practices and high care standards for medically fragile infants at risk of necrotizing enterocolitis and their families.
Promote & Conduct Research
  • Partner with scientists whose research focuses on necrotizing enterocolitis.
  • Develop research priorities needed to prevent, reduce, and treat necrotizing enterocolitis.
